However, it is not recommended that you drive like this regularly. You won't save fuel as the rear wheels are still turning the axles, differential and prop-shaft, you are still carrying the extra weight of the AWD bits, and you will lose whatever handling benifits that the AWD gives you (It isn't just for traction in the winter... you have a Subaru, not a Volvo!)
I would not put much stock in the suggestion to disconnect for the summer.

The AWD system may not be designed to operate efficiently with the rear end disconnected electrically. The mechanicals will still be spinning, anyway, rolling with the rear tires.

The car was designed to run as AWD All the time. Trust the design. It is not the same as a truck with shiftable 4-wheel drive.
In my 92 SVX and my old 96 Outback, there was an empty "FWD" fuse socket. If you inserted one of the spare fuses into it, a FWD light would come on on the gauge cluster and the car would be in FWD mode, although it's recommended only for emergency situations.

My understanding of this fuse from my 96 outback was for diagnostic, and emissions purposes ONLY, and was not to be driven on the road like that.
I think that many people correctly understand a 2WD car to be more fuel efficient than an AWD car, and through a poor understanding of how exactly all the bits underneath the car are connected and turn, believe that turning their AWD car into a 2WD car will save gas.

While that may be true for a truck with locking hubs, it is not true for AWD passenger car as all the drivetrain bits that send power to the rear wheels are now simply being driven by the rear wheels, not directly by the engine. This still uses the same amount of fuel.

either way, we want something that's AWD and 4 door. so we figured that the legacy would be the best way to go. i don't plan on switching from AWD to 2WD. kind of defeats the whole purpose of buying an AWD car.

i know what i'm getting. i'm getting a 97 dodgt intrepid. it's got 109000 miles and it's only for like 2000. i think it's a deal. and it's the only one that my husband think i would get a good deal out of compared to the other cars that i found on craigslist.

yea, but the person who had it before is a mommy also, so i know that those miles were most likely put on there from shit like soccer games and things liek that, but like i said, i'm going to look at it first and check it out before i buy it. i might now even get it. who knows. i'll have to check it out really fucking well before i put my little boy in it. might even puta roll cage in. heehee.
